Switzerland's Roger Federer has been given a bye into the second round of the Cincinnati Masters 2011 and he clashes with Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, on Monday, August 15, 2011, in what promises to be an exciting match between two top-drawer players. While Federer is ranked third in the world, Del Potro is currently ranked 19th.
Born on September 23, 1988, 23-year old the Argentine is seven years younger than the Swiss legend who was born on August 8, 1981, and turned 30, exactly a week ago.
The Argentine is a resident of Tandil, Argentina, where he was born, and also has a height advantage, being 198 cm tall, 13 cm more than Federer who is 185 cm tall. However, despite his greater height, Del Potro at 83 kg is two kilos lighter than Federer who is 85 kg. Both players are right-handed; while Federer turned professional in 1998, the Argentine followed suit seven years later, in 2005.
This year, the players have had an almost identical record; while Federer has won 39 matches and lost 10, his young Argentine rival has won 36 and lost 9. While Federer has won just the solitary title in 2011, the Argentine has won two. However, when it comes to career titles won, there's simply no comparison, with Del Potro's nine titles not measuring up to Federer's 67. and while Del Potro has won over .5 million in prize money, Federer is far ahead, on that count, having won more than .5 million.
Head to head, Federer leads 6-2, in eight games played against the Argentine, but the more interesting statistic is that the Argentine has won the last two encounters between the players.
Del Potro's first win against Federer came in the first round of the 2009 US Open, when the Argentine prevailed in an intriguing five-setter 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. the latest match between the two players came later, the same year, at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, when the Argentine ended the winner in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
Federer complately dominated the young Argentine player when they met for the first time on a tennis court, at Wimbledon, in 2007. The second round match went the Swiss player's way when he won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-1. The next match between the two came later in 2007, at Basel, Switzerland, when Federer despatched Del Potro 6-1, 6-4, in a round of 16 encounter.
Thereafter, Federer had two more straight sets wins over the Argentine, the first coming at the quarter-finals of the 2009 Australian Open, and the next, later the same year, in the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Master 1000 at Madrid, Spain.
Del Potro first revealed what a threat he could be to Federer's domination when he took the Swiss world number three to five sets at Roland Garros, with Federer eking out a win by the score-line of 3-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
